The Honda Accord is the hands-down benchmark in its segment, besting rivals with its unique combination of a smooth ride, satisfying handling, and sophisticated and spacious interior. So we’ll forgive Honda for increasing the starting price by $150 as the midsizer moves into a new model year. The 2020 Honda Accord goes on sale today with a base price of $24,800, undercutting the 2020 Toyota Camry‘s starting price of $25,250.
As much as we love the Accord, we were hoping Honda would make a few tweaks to the 2020 model before its 2021 mid-cycle refresh. But we didn’t get those updates, as the 2020 Accord returns virtually unchanged. It still gets a generous list of standard features, including Honda Sensing, which bundles together collision mitigation braking with pedestrian sensing, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, and traffic sign recognition.
The 1.5-liter turbo-four returns as the base engine making 192 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque, backed by a CVT. A 2.0-liter turbo-four remains available with 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, pairing with a 10-speed automatic. Don’t worry—the manual transmission is still available on either engine with the Sport trim. The Accord Hybrid will return for 2020, but prices and on-sale information will be announced separately.
Models with the 2.0-liter gas engine start at $31,990. The most expensive Accord is the Touring, and it starts at $37,030. That’s much more than the starting price of the highest trim level on the Camry, the XSE V6, which goes from $35,955.
We can’t complain that Honda is keeping the same successful formula in place for 2020. But about a year from now, we can expect some minor visual updates, which we hope will replace the large belt-buckle Honda badge on the grille with something a little more subdued. We can also reasonably expect a few additional features to help sweeten the pot further and lure back crossover-crazed customers.
