Emelia Hartford isn’t really a typical Corvette buyer. Sure, there’s a Corvette engine in her Nissan S14 240SX drift car, but she’s never had a Corvette in the past and said, “I honestly never thought I would own one.”
That’s what is so special about this next generation of Chevrolet‘s legendary sports car: it represents a revolutionary departure from what the Corvette used to be. So much so that it appeals to folks who wouldn’t normally consider Corvette ownership. Hartford had been shopping for her first supercar and the list of candidates included the Ferrari 360, Lamborghini Huracan, Lamborghini Aventador, and Ferrari 488 GTB, but none fit the bill as well as the C8 Corvette. “When this came out I just felt like it was perfect. I don’t know how to better describe it.”
Upon posting a video to her YouTube channel expressing interest in buying a mid-engine ‘Vette, some of her commenters suggested that she reach out to a salesperson named Mike Davenport. He goes by Chevy Dude and has a considerable YouTube following just like Hartford does. She scheduled a phone call with Davenport and they talked paint, trim level, and options. To reserve her C8 Corvette, Hartford plunked down a $5,000 non-refundable deposit before even knowing the final cost of her car. Though we’ve heard of some dealers telling customers they’ll be selling 2020 Corvettes at “whatever the market deems appropriate,” Davenport assured Hartford she won’t be paying more than sticker.
Hartford’s mid-engine Corvette will be an Arctic White 2LT model with the interior done up in Adrenaline Red. Her original build was a 1LT model, but she stepped up to 2LT because she’s been told that 1LT models won’t be built until the profit-rich 2LT and 3LT have already been delivered. She wants her car as soon as possible.
Hartford is also upgrading to GT3 Competition seats instead of buying aftermarket seats, and adding the nose-lift system—essential for driving in the city. Total price for the build comes out to around $77K. She’s planning to pick up the car at Davenport’s dealership in Kentucky, driving to her childhood home in Indiana to lay down a quarter-mile time and do some donuts with her mom, and then piloting her sparkly new mid-engine Corvette all the way back to Los Angeles.
Hartford says she’ll keep the car relatively stock at first since she’s planning to use her C8 Corvette as a daily driver, but don’t take that to mean boring. Her plans for the car include but are not limited to a wrap with a fun livery, wheels and tires, aftermarket exhaust, and a big ‘ol wing on the back. She’s toying with the idea of a widebody kit and says, “I really want to twin-turbo it. I feel like there’s the perfect amount of room since they were advertising two golf bags being able to fit.” If the C8 Corvette will fit two golf bags, it should have no trouble making room for two turbos.
