Western intelligence services have called on tech giants such as WhatsApp and Facebook to guarantee a back door through which the police and security services can secure evidence.

Ministers from the countries in the Five Eyes network — Britain, the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand — discussed the terror threat, online child sex abuse and drones over two days of meetings in London.

Their joint statement cited concerns that companies were designing their systems “in a way that precludes any form of access to content, even in cases of the most serious crimes”.

They added: “This approach puts citizens and society at risk by severely eroding a company’s ability to identify and respond to the most harmful illegal content, such as child sexual exploitation…
