Tech Giants’ M&A Should Get Tougher Scrutiny, EU Economist Urges

Merger regulators should look at the value of Silicon Valley deals and how tech companies would be able to generate revenue from their knowledge of users’ behavior, according to the European Union’s chief competition economist.

Tommaso Valletti called for analysis of “the price paid and the nature of the business acquired” as well as company documents explaining the strategy behind the deal.

The current thresholds for triggering an EU merger review are based on revenue, which doesn’t help catch deals…
